Introduction: Green Building Systems: Features, Appraisal, and Ventilation

Specifically, upon completion of this chapter, participants will be able to: 1) Identify and describe the key features of various green building systems, including high-performance HVAC systems, renewable energy sources (e.g., solar photovoltaics, geothermal), water conservation measures, and sustainable materials. 2) Apply appropriate appraisal methodologies for evaluating green building systems, taking into account factors such as energy efficiency, lifecycle cost analysis, and environmental impact assessment. 3) Analyze the critical role of ventilation in maintaining indoor air quality and occupant health in green buildings, including understanding the principles of natural and mechanical ventilation, the use of energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) and heat recovery ventilators (HRVs), and strategies for minimizing indoor air pollutants.
